THE CLIENT
East Surrey College is a forward-thinking FE provider offering a wide range of academic, vocational, and technical qualifications. Their continued investment in high-quality learning environments reflects their commitment to student experience, wellbeing, and curriculum growth.
-
Ash Technical Services were appointed to deliver a full refurbishment of the college’s Learning Resource Centre. The aim was to modernise the environment, improve accessibility, and create dedicated spaces for the Safeguarding, ALS and learning support teams. The project included:
Three new offices for Safeguarding and ALS
A new classroom
A dedicated ALS study zone with focused learning pods, computer workstations, quiet areas, and collaborative spaces
New finishes, flooring, lighting, data provision and redecoration throughout
The result is a more functional, flexible and supportive learning hub at the heart of the college.
-
Delivering the refurbishment within the summer term time required:
Careful reconfiguration of existing office and classroom layouts
Installation of new partitions, glazing and acoustic features
Upgrades to electrics, data and small power to support the new study zones
Managing works directly above and adjacent to live areas still in use during term time.
The LRC also supports high daily footfall, making durability, accessibility, and acoustic performance key priorities in design and planning.
-
We implemented a detailed pre-construction plan before construction began, allowing us to hit the ground running with minimal disruption to students and staff.
Our approach included:
Sequencing partitioning, M&E, and finishing trades to maintain constant momentum
Early ordering of glazing and data components to avoid delays
Working closely with college Estates to coordinate weekend access and deliveries
Daily site supervision and clear communication with teaching staff relocating during works
This ensured the LRC refurbishment remained safe for staff & students whilst keeping the program on track.
-
The refurbished Learning Resource Centre now offers a modern, accessible and well-structured environment for both students and staff. Key benefits include:
Improved support spaces for safeguarding and ALS teams
A high-quality study zone tailored to different learning styles
A professional new classroom supporting curriculum expansion
Durable, contemporary finishes designed for long-term use
The project was completed on time, ready for the return of students in September.
