THE CLIENT

East Surrey College is a well-established further education provider based in Redhill, Surrey. The college delivers a wide range of academic, vocational, and apprenticeship courses to school leavers, adult learners, and employers across the region. As part of Orbital South Colleges, the college is committed to providing high-quality learning environments that support student success and wellbeing.

Ash Technical Services was appointed to carry out a series of internal toilet refurbishments across the campus as part of the college’s ongoing investment in modern, accessible, and hygienic facilities.

  • Ash Technical Services were appointed to refurbish two main toilet blocks at East Surrey College, delivering a total of 46 new self-contained cubicles across male, female, ambulant, and accessible formats, all designed in a modern super loo layout.

    The works included:

    • Complete strip out and reconfiguration of existing toilet layouts across both E Block and A Block

    • Installation of fully self-contained super loo cubicles, each including a WC, hand basin, and hand dryer to enhance hygiene, privacy, and space efficiency

    • Integration of superloo units across all toilet types, offering consistent levels of privacy, inclusivity, and modern usability throughout

    • Construction of two new cleaner stores within Block A, including the retention and reinstallation of existing cupboard doors to reduce waste

    • Installation of new flooring throughout to provide durability and ease of maintenance

    • Installation of hygienic wall finishes to improve cleanliness and enhance the look and feel of each space

    • Specification and installation of high-quality sanitaryware for a clean, modern user experience

    • Installation of new IPS (Integrated Plumbing Systems) to conceal pipework and allow for easier servicing

    • Adaptations to all associated plumbing, ventilation, and electrical systems.

  • Following our appointment immediately after the Christmas break, we were given just one week to begin on site. Fortunately, we had pre-planned the entire programme in anticipation of winning the tender. This allowed us to hit the ground running with materials, trades, and site logistics already in place, which was a key factor in the project’s successful start.

The greatest challenge was delivering the works within a live college environment during term time, including through the exam period. Our team implemented a robust logistics and noise management plan to minimise disruption, with all surrounding areas remaining fully operational throughout. Unexpected issues beyond our control also arose during the programme, but thanks to our agile approach, we adapted quickly and maintained momentum.

    In Summary

A combination of tight timelines, live working conditions, and reactive on-site adjustments made this a complex project to deliver. Through pre-planning, close coordination, and a flexible team approach, we ensured a successful outcome for the college. The project was completed on time and under budget.

  • The refurbishment works were completed smoothly and successfully, thanks to early planning, close collaboration with the college and Fusion PM, and a proactive site presence from day one. Our partnership with the client team remained strong throughout the programme, and our agile problem-solving approach was key to maintaining progress during live college operations.

We mobilised rapidly just days after the Christmas break, with strip-out works beginning almost immediately. This early momentum created valuable breathing room in the programme and gave the college confidence that the project would remain on track.

We remained responsive throughout, offering technical advice and quick-thinking solutions to challenges as they arose. The college and Fusion PM welcomed our structured, low-disruption approach to logistics, especially during exam season.

The refurbishment has delivered lasting benefits to the college. They now have:

    • A set of modernised toilet facilities that align with their wider investment in campus improvements

    • Super loo-style cubicles that offer increased privacy, improved hygiene, and greater inclusivity for all users

    • Durable, high-quality finishes and sanitaryware that will stand the test of time

    • Two new cleaner stores to support their facilities teams and improve day-to-day maintenance efficiency

This project has significantly uplifted the quality and functionality of the college’s welfare provision. Delivered in a live environment, on time and under budget, it demonstrates our ability to plan carefully, react quickly, and give with confidence.
